EthCC 8 recap: biggest Ethereum conference insights

A goodmorning recap of EthCC8, side events, and why crypto conferences have the wildest travel karma.

The French Riviera in summer. Blockchain builders from around the globe. Million-dollar villas overlooking the Mediterranean. And somehow, I managed to turn a Web3 conference into the kind of adventure that makes you question whether the universe has a sense of humor. Spoiler alert: It absolutely does.

Why I was there

Before diving into the good stuff, let me set the stage. I'm Kalo from goodmorning, and I've been working on Ambire's products for over 4 years now. They're our long-term client, and we've built some solid relationships over the years. From time to time, they invite us to events to present the work we've developed firsthand - and honestly, who better than our engineers to showcase what we've built?

That's how I found myself in Cannes, ready to represent both goodmorning and the tech we've been crafting.

The travel karma strikes again

At this point, I'm convinced crypto conferences come with their own gravitational field that bends space-time and airline schedules. But hey - when life gives you flight delays, you get to witness the most insane fireworks show on July 4th with my project buddy from Ambire, Cinesius. Sometimes the universe knows what it's doing.

Multichain Day: Where the magic began

June 30th kicked off with Multichain Day by Wrapped - hands down one of the standout EthCC side events. Packed with people from all backgrounds, it was all about cross-chain expansion and real-world interoperability. The energy was solid, the ideas were sharp, and the crowd was genuinely diverse.

One of the most interesting panels I attended was about dApps and consumer products. Ivo Georgiev (CEO of Ambire) joined the discussion, and his take really resonated with me: UX is broken - in both Web2 and Web3. The panel was on fire, covering PayFi, wallets, yield, and swaps, but what struck me most was how everyone agreed that we're still not meeting users where they are.

This got me thinking about our work with wallet UX. Switching wallets is like changing your bank account - you need trust, you need reasons, and you need time. It doesn't happen overnight. That's exactly the challenge we're tackling.

But here's the key insight that multiple people hammered home: mobile-first is non-negotiable. UX must meet users where they are. No excuses - it's 2025!

After soaking up all these insights, I closed the day with a cold beer at one of the events. Having been to the Denver edition too, it was great to see familiar faces and continue those conversations.

EthCC and side events: From million-dollar villas to beachside energy

DeFi Summer Day: Villa vibes with Vitalik

DeFi Summer Day by AAVE was hosted at a million-dollar villa overlooking the French Riviera. Because apparently, that's just how crypto conferences roll now. Over 1,200 builders and founders from AAVE, Chainlink, Aptos, zkSync, Fireblocks, LiFi, EtherFi and more showed up. Five sharp panels covering RWAs, stablecoins, modular DeFi, and security - all while mixing drinks on the terrace.

What really stood out to me? Crypto still feels refreshingly down-to-earth. You'd see top founders like Stani Kulechov hanging by the pool, sipping lemonade, jumping into random chats - no VIP sections, no ego. Just good vibes and real conversations under the Mediterranean sun.

This is DeFi culture at its best: open, casual, and completely authentic.

MetaMask Builder Night: Beachside energy with mixed results

July 6th brought the MetaMask Builder Night in collaboration with Linea, Tron, 1inch and others. The setting was unreal - beachside at La Plage du Festival with panels, music, beach games, and crowds so massive that at some point you could barely move. The crowd was so loud you could hardly hear the speakers!

Having been to the ETH Denver edition, I had high expectations. In Denver, Dan Finlay came in with hot updates, cool retrospectives, and strong takes that really added value. This time around, I wish the panels had a bit more depth. The energy was still great and the setting was incredible, but the content didn't quite hit the same mark.

Still, I managed to catch up with folks I'd met earlier, including a great conversation with sat_eth who was kind enough to make some intros. I even joked, "If a project shows up at two big conferences in a row - it's probably not a scam," which got some good laughs and seemed like solid validation logic. The community vibes were definitely in full force in Cannes!

Key takeaways and market insights

The overall vibes? Maximum optimism on everything.

  • Mobile-first reality check: Every conversation reinforced that mobile-first isn't just nice-to-have anymore - it's absolutely non-negotiable for any serious Web3 product.
  • UX remains the biggest challenge: Whether Web2 or Web3, user experience is still fundamentally broken. The winners will be those who solve for less friction and more flow.
  • Community over corporate: The most valuable connections happened in casual settings, not formal presentations. DeFi culture's open, ego-free approach continues to be its superpower.
  • Market sentiment shifting: Every big player is looking for entry points. Stablecoins are surging. The bottom might be in. Sentiment is shifting fast, and Ethereum feels alive again. We may be on the verge of a major inflection point.

Fun facts and memorable moments

  • 250+ side events happened during EthCC week (that's absolutely insane)
  • Flight cancellations are apparently a crypto conference tradition, but the delays led to witnessing the most incredible July 4th fireworks show
  • Million-dollar villa settings are just Tuesday in the crypto conference world
  • Vitalik casually hanging out at villa parties is peak DeFi culture

Bringing it all back home

ETH Cannes wasn't just another conference for me - it was validation. Validation that our approach to Web3 development, our long-term partnership with Ambire, and our technical expertise are genuinely hitting the mark.

The networking connections I made across 20+ major projects, the deep conversations about UX challenges that we're actively tackling in our daily work, the recognition when industry leaders heard about our engineering approach - it all reinforced that we're not just building Web3 products at goodmorning. We're helping define what the future of Web3 should look like.

Having our work showcased at major industry events, getting pulled into technical discussions with founders who are shaping the ecosystem, being part of conversations about mobile-first development and user experience - this is exactly where we want to be as a company.

And honestly? With travel karma like mine, I'm pretty sure the universe is just making sure I don't miss any of the good stuff. Even if it means arriving a few days late and leaving with canceled flights.

The vibes are always worth the journey.
